Building 101: Doors + Windows

My favorite part of the build was choosing doors + windows (mostly doors) because I think that they are very defining features of your house and completely change the vibe that your house gives off. Here's some details on the doors and windows in my house.

We had originally looked at doing black windows until we saw the cost. If you are thinking about doing black windows in your house, there is usually a higher cost associated with those windows.

We did single hung windows because most of our house is on one floor making the windows fairly easy to access. To be honest with you, I think the only reason we didn't do double hung windows was to save money. I've said before that we built on a budget so we looked for any place to cost costs and that was an easy one to cut out. I have rarely wanted a window to be double hung since we've moved in so I don't miss it.

Most of our interior doors are solid with the exception of a few places, like the linen closet, the pantry, etc. The main doors people are using are solid, painted wood.

My front door was a custom front door from Therma-Tru (model FC1089-GBGF in the stain English Walnut). It's stainable fiberglass that looks like wood and was a custom order because we wanted to stain the grids to match the door so they are exterior, which is not standard for that door. Our front door was a splurge because it's not only custom, but it has large windows.

We wanted a classic, timeless interior door style to match the rest of the house (squared off edges, similar shapes mirrored throughout the rest of the house). We did an oil rubbed bronze knob. See the photo below.

For our windows, we wanted a grid down the center so it's simple and matches our front door. We wanted it to look seamless so the single grid matches the styles in the rest of the house. See the photo below.

For our entrance, we got sidelights that match the front door. Note the stained grids, which would have been white if we had not gone custom with the stainable grids.

For the backdoor, we did a simple grid pattern with very visible line to our backyard and future back porch.

For the door to our garage, it matches the rests of the doors but it's metal. Since it's painted white, it's not super noticeable that it's metal.

Since the bonus space is unfinished, we put an exterior door to that area that will be switched out once it's finished. For now, it's keeping out the hot/cold weather that's coming in the bonus area form the rest off the house.

Answering your questions:

  • Door from garage to outside? We actually didn't do a door from the garage to the outside. Since our front door is close to the garage, we pulled that door from our plans and we don't miss it!

  • Window size? Our windows are 3x5.

  • All doors the same? Ours are all the same (for now!)
