This week on my Instagram stories, we talked about foundations and framings for our weekly series, Building 101. Here's what that stage of the building process looked like for us.
We did a full basement that's partially finished. It's mostly unfinished, the only thing that was finished was our in-law suite. Since our basement is partially finished, it has poured concrete walls (with a protective covering due to code). After the basements walls were poured and beams were installed, that's when framing began.
Framing was one of the first exciting times of our build because it's when things finally started to take shape. I was warned that rooms might feel small in the framing stage and that was definitely true for me. I was actually concerned that the rooms would not be large enough to function the way we wanted them to but my husband measured the spaces to give me peace of mind, but it will all come together once drywall is added.
If you are thinking that you might want to change things, like moving a window, changing a doorway, etc... framing is really the last time in a build to make big changes without running into crazy charges. You may still run into change fees, but it won't be nearly as bad as if you want to do those changes later.
Also, framing is the perfect time to add things to the wood beams in your house. We wrote bible verses and notes to each other. It was really special for us to memorialize this time in our lives and put a little bit of ourselves into our house.
As always, I'm happy to answer questions you have about home building! Follow along on Instagram to see Building 101 every Wednesday.
