If you've followed our build from the beginning, then you may know why we ultimately decided that building would be the best option for us. Here's some of the reasons that we decided to build.
It was never our plan to build a house right now. However, when we started looking for our next house we weren't really seeing anything we loved. The land that we bought kind of fell into our lap, but we planned to sit on the land and build down the road. So when we looked at houses on the market and began to calculate the expenses it would take to make a house more suited for us, we decided to look into the cost of building as well and compare them.
We met with several builders in Fall of 2018 so prices have changed since then as the price to build goes up every year but at that time it was not going to cost us a significant amount more to build rather than buy and fix up a house on the market. We spent a lot of time looking at quotes for building and looking at houses on the market and comparing the costs for both. We ultimately decided that building was the best option for us at this point in our lives.
So if you're looking into building, here are some reasons why building could be a great option for you:
It's customized to you, your family and what's important to you. We focused on making the entertaining spaces larger since we want to have all of our friends and family over.
There are so many options when it comes to building- the only limits are your imagination and your budget.
Your house is planned around your future (this is what sold us in the long run)
The best pieces of advices we received while building:
Plan for the future as much as you can (the expected, the unexpected and everything in between). This will make a big difference for your house, how happy you are there and how functional it is for you and your family.
This is your house, you have to like it. It doesn't matter if your builder likes it or if your designer likes it. You have to like it.
Use every inch of your house! Don't let space go to waste. Turn it in to storage or something functional. Take our bonus space for example. That was going to be 54' of attic space that will now be a future bedroom and study.
I hope this helps you get started with your build! It can be such a fun experience if you sit back, enjoy the ride and don't get hung up on the small stuff.
