Building 101: Landscapes

Building 101 is back this week and we are talking all about landscaping!

As most of you know, this house was built on a budget and we cut anywhere that we could. Cutting out having the landscaping done by our builder was an easy way to save money- but that doesn't mean that landscaping ourselves is inexpensive or easy.

If you're planning to do it yourself like we are, a word to the wise, make sure that when they dig for your house they are skimming and saving the top soil. After your build is done, you'll want them to push that top soil back around the house. That will be your best bet for getting things to grow, rather than trying to plant in the clay that they've dug up. We have had a tough time getting some of our grass to grow since not all of the topsoil was pushed around the house.

Now that the grass is finally starting to come through, we are planning the plantings around the house. Here's a really rough sketch of what we are planning:

Keep in mind, this area of our house is heavily shaded most of the day because of the way that the sun hits our house so almost all of the plants we are planning to install are shade plants. The only exception to this is the tree on the corner of the house, as it gets full sun. On the back of the house we have full sun, so we are planting very different plants there.
