Building 101: Pantry and Closet Spaces

Happy New Year! Building 101 took a break for the holidays but we are back. If you are unfamiliar, Building 101 is a weekly series I do on Instagram stories with a few other accounts and each week we give building tips and advice.

Let's dive right in.

If you are building or planning to build a house, give yourself plenty of storage spaces. You're never going to say that you have too much storage. Whether that be lots of linen closets, large bedroom closets or ample storage rooms, give yourself as much room to store as you can.

Before you move in, I'd also encourage you to have some sort of organizational plan. It's so easy to throw stuff in a closet and forget about it, but if you move in with an organization plan in place, it will be easy to unpack and continue to follow that plan.

Our closet is 10' x 10', which I thought would be too much space, but it has been great. However, the one downside to our closets are the shelving. As you may know, we built on a budget which means that we cut costs where we could- like closet shelving. We opted for the most budget friendly shelving which was one wire shelf around the closets and hanging rods. Now that we've lived in and used the space, I would not recommend that shelving to everybody. We have future plans to change this. However, if you are needing to cut stuff out of your budget, that is an easy one to cut. Using bins and baskets do help with organization in all of your spaces.

For our pantry, we did wire shelves as well. This has been fine for us as we've started using plastic food storage containers and wicker baskets to store food. In addition to the aesthetics, plastic food storage bins are great for keeping bugs out (like pantry moths) and keeping the food fresh.

Something else I'd recommend for both pantries and closets are outlets. It's so convenient to have them available in both of those areas.
