Building 101: Plumbing Fixtures

When we picked out our fixtures, we did all of them throughout our builder's supplier at our design meetings.

When we originally envisioned the house, we had thought we would be putting oil rubbed bronze fixtures at every sink, faucet, etc. However, this is an additional cost associated with doing anything other than brushed nickel or stainless. It's not a crazy amount of money, but when you're building, every penny adds up so we wanted to be conscious of our spending.

I was under the impression that each room needed to have the same sort of metal, from the light fixtures, the plumbing fixtures and the cabinet pulls. I now know and appreciate how wrong that was when we ultimately decided to mix metals in our bathrooms. Some of our bathrooms have an oil rubbed light with a brushed nickel faucet and oil rubbed cabinet pulls with a brush nickel shower head.... you get the point. I wasn't convinced that I would like it until we saw them installed and now I love them!

Also, keep in mind that centers faucets (meaning the handles are connected to the faucet like this) are less expensive than a wide spread faucet.

In our primary bathroom, we went oil rubbed bronze for everything which I think is a nice contrast with the light walls and tile and the darker wood vanity. Click each bullet for the details:

Same with the kitchen, since everything else was white except the knobs, we opted for an oil rubbed bronze faucet.

In our hall bath, we mixed metals with the oil rubbed bronze fixtures and pulls and the stainless faucets.

In our half bathroom, we mixed metals too with the brushed nickel faucet and the oil rubbed bronze light fixture.
