Building 101: Porches

Happy Wednesday, friends! Its time for another building 101, and this time we are talking about front and back porches. You can head over to my Instagram stories to see me talk about this too!

Our front porch is one of my favorite spaces and it was also one of the first spaces we designed when we planned the house. Early one, we knew we wanted a large sitting porch and we wanted it to be a focal point for the front of the house. We basically planned the porch and the gables and built the rest of the house around that. However, we still tried to keep our front porch budget friendly. One area that was a bit more expensive that I would absolutely recommend to everyone is using a synthetic decking instead of a wood or cement deck. It makes the entry way very cozy, all while being pet-friendly, and never needing stained.

Our porch is about 6' deep by 34' wide. We wanted enough space for several chairs to fit comfortable but not be too tight. I love the size of the porch and wouldn't change it.

If you're wondering why you've never seen our back porch, that's because it doesn't exist. We had originally wanted to do a screened in porch, but it was something we cut for the budget, knowing that we would add it later. We discussed this with our builder as well, so they made sure the architecture for the back of would accommodate future additions without making it look like an afterthought (this is why I preach to plan for the future as much as possible!).

Be sure to check out my Instagram stories for a walking tour of these spaces and DM me with any questions you have!
