Building 101: Windows and Doors

If you're new to my site, Building 101 is a weekly Instagram story that I do with a couple of my favorite home accounts and we cover a topic from our build and share our perspective.

This week, we covered windows and doors which are so important for the outward appearance of your home and can make a big difference for the natural light that's brought in.

Here's our experience with our windows and doors during our build:

  • We originally planned on doing black windows everywhere but found the cost to be significantly higher than doing white windows. For that reason we used white windows in our house and I love the way that they look!

  • Our interior doors are all painted white with oil rubbed bronze hardware

  • Our main doors (bedrooms, bathrooms, etc) have solid doors and our closets have hollow doors

  • Almost every window in our house is 3' x 5'

  • All of our windows are single hung, since they are all pretty easily accessible for cleaning and because it saved us money rather than doing double hung.

  • All of our windows are Simonton Windows

  • We did the same windows in almost every room

  • For the exterior, we really focused on symmetry and how it'd look from the outside because we wanted your eyes to be drawn to our house as a whole and not weird or misaligned windows

  • All of our windows are in line with our doors, meaning the tops are our windows are the same height as the tops of the doors

  • Our front door is a custom ThermaTru door. It is very similar to this door with grilles, but we had the grilles on the windows be put on the exterior so they can be stained to match the door

  • Our stain was selected through our builder. They showed us several stain samples when we chose the door and we selected based on that

A couple tips/things to keep in mind for anyone building:

  • If you are planning on using a room as a bedroom, either now or in the future, make sure your window is up-to-code for it to be a bedroom. We had to change a widow in the bonus space since we plan to make it a bedroom or bunk room in the future.

  • When you are planning rooms and windows, make sure you look at the whole house. There was an entire side of our house that the designer had not put any windows on and we made sure to add them.

  • If you know what wall you plan to put your bed on, tell your builder/designer early on. This helps not only for window spacing but for outlet spacing as well.

See what I mean about the symmetry? All of the windows are evenly spaced and matching.

In this picture, you can see the stained grilles on the front door. If we hadn't made it custom, these grilles would be interior and white (like the windows) which we didn't think would look good on the front porch.
